At Fort Lauderdale Veterinary Center, we utilize both comprehensive ultrasound examinations and Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) as part of our commitment to prevention, advanced diagnostics, chronic disease management, and lifelong wellness.

Abdominal ultrasound allows us to evaluate organs such as the liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands, pancreas, stomach, and intestines. It can help identify structural changes, masses, inflammation, fluid accumulation, urinary abnormalities, and changes associated with chronic disease.

This is especially valuable for pets with vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, appetite changes, abnormal bloodwork, urinary signs, abdominal discomfort, suspected masses, or ongoing medical conditions that require monitoring.

Echocardiography, or ultrasound of the heart, provides a detailed look at heart structure, chamber size, valve function, blood flow patterns, and overall cardiac performance. It can help assess heart murmurs, suspected heart disease, coughing or breathing concerns, exercise intolerance, collapse episodes, and monitoring of known cardiac conditions.

Together, abdominal ultrasound and echocardiography help us detect disease earlier, monitor progression more accurately, and make more informed treatment recommendations.

What is POCUS?

Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is a focused ultrasound examination performed during a patient’s visit to help answer specific clinical questions quickly and efficiently.

POCUS allows veterinarians to gain additional information in real time and can complement the physical examination, laboratory testing, and traditional imaging.

POCUS may be used to assess:

  • Abdominal fluid
  • Bladder abnormalities
  • Cardiac silhouette
  • Organ size and architecture
  • Gastrointestinal changes
  • Suspected masses
  • Monitoring chronic disease
  • Patient stability in urgent situations
  • Follow-up evaluation of known conditions
